Eliminate Spam Emails

More than ever scammers and hackers spamming your website forms has become a huge problem, but fortunately we have found a collection of spam tools, mostly free, that has eliminated all spam from our website forms. We have integrated this solution in over 50 client websites and they all now enjoy a nearly spam free form submissions. I will say 99.9% spam free because some scammer will always be the exception, however the solutions below have definitely a game changer. I have provided links to the three tools you will need, then below that I go into detail about what each of them does.

Anti-Spam Procrastination
Let me be blunt, anti-spam solutions are something you need NOW, not later. If you wait on this, you risk multiple things going wrong. At best you get a progressively larger collection of daily spam email as the network of spammers figure out your website is an easy target. At worst, your domain name and/or email addresses get blacklisted, where you will lose the ability to send and/or receive any emails at all. On top of that, the blacklist thing can become time consuming to undo, complicated to find the right person to fix, and possibly expensive to resolve. Plus while your emails are down, you lose the ability to verify any of your online logins via email which could result in loss of access lots of website you rely on daily. If you do choose to wait, and a problem does arise, you will want to reach out to your hosting company as a starting point. They may not be able to solve your problems, but they will likely be able to point you in the right direction.

Anti-Spam Techniques - Anti-Spam HoneyPot (Free with any paid version of WPforms)
Honeypot, as the name suggests, is a "trap" that is designed to lure bots and computer programs into accidentally revealing their identities. This method of anti-spam provides an extra field on the form that is hidden from the user, but visible to Bots. By design the bot fills in all the form fields including the field hidden from the user, and then the bot submits the form. When the form is submitted with content in the hidden field, the Bot has revealed itself and the form subimission is flagged as spam, thus no email is sent.

Anti-Spam Techniques - Invisible Anti-Spam Token (Free with any paid version of WPforms)
Behind the scenes WPforms adds a unique secret token to each submission. Spambots can’t detect the token and without it, they get stuck and can’t submit the form. On the other hand, the token is always automatically added to the submission for real users. So even though real users don’t even notice it’s there, they are able to submit forms without a problem.

Anti-Spam Techniques - Anti-Spam Submission Timer (Free with any paid version of WPforms)
Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks are a type of attack that involves flooding a website form with requests so that it is unable to respond to legitimate requests. This type of attack can be used to disrupt services and slow down the performance of a website. Behind the scenes WPforms adds a timer to your forms where you can adjust how long the user must wait before they can submit a form, where the timer basically eliminates DoS form attacks. For example, we added two different timers for JoseOne.com, 30 seconds for the Contact Us page and 120 seconds for the subscription page for SEO services. The benefit here is that Bots will attempt to submit too soon in all cases, and manual hackers will not want to waste their time waiting for the hidden submission timer to expire. JoseOne noticed a 100% success rate in removing fake orders simply because of the anti-spam timer as no one could fill out a legit order in less than 120 second (2 mins) and real people placing fake orders were not willing to wait 2 mins to complete the fake order particularly when they had no idea how long the wait window would be.

Anti-Spam Techniques - Anti-Spam Keywords Filter (Free with any paid version of WPforms)
If you’re getting spam submissions from human visitors, it can be tricky to block them. Human-submitted contact form messages are a slightly different type of spam that most anti-spam methods typically can’t block. To deal with human-generated spam and profanity, you can use the keyword filter tool built into WPForms. Just toggle on the Enable keyword Filter button and enter a list of keywords that you want to be blocked from submissions. At the bottom of this page I have provided a list of the 300 keywords we use in the WPforms Keywords Filter. You will want to review the list and remove any keywords you feel could limit your real submissions, then add any keywords you feel are missing.

Anti-Spam Techniques - Akismet Anti-spam (Free for personal use)
One of the best free anti-spam protection tools to block spam comments and spam in a contact form is Akismet Anti-spam. Akismet Anti-spam is the most trusted antispam solution for WordPress and WooCommerce. Akismet checks your comments and contact form submissions against our global database of spam to prevent your website forms from sending if it detects malicious content. WPforms has a great tutorial on how to integrate Akismet Anti-spam into your forms for free. Akismet Anti-spam is free to use for personal websites, but if you run advertising on your website you might want to choose the paid version. Akismet Anti-spam seems to be on the honor system and you will be able to compare your free vs paid options when you signup.

Anti-Spam Techniques - Google reCAPTCHA (Free for all uses)
Google reCAPTCHA is by far the most popular anti-spam tools available. It is a free service that helps protect websites from abuse and spam. Google reCAPTCHA works by using an advanced risk analysis engine and adaptive CAPTCHAs to prevent automated software from engaging in abusive activities on a site. It does this while allowing valid users to pass through with ease. It uses a Turing test to differentiate between humans and bots where reCAPTCHA are relatively simple for humans to solve, but difficult for bots and other malicious software to figure out. WPforms has a great tutorial on how to integrate Google reCAPTCHA into your forms for free.

Our Anti-Spam Strategy
As you probably have ascertained, many of these anti-spam methods are quite clever and it takes that to beat the hackers out there trying to spam your website forms. For us, the most successful anti-spam strategy to eliminate email spam is to incorporate as many anti-spam solutions as you can. What's nice is that, not only does WPforms have integration options for both Google reCAPTCHA and Akismet Anti-spam which are both free, but WPforms Pro also has the four additional anti-spam methods mentioned above. WebYoda invested in the paid version of WPforms and we have not regreted our decision. Though we needed the top tier WPforms Elite to meet our client base needs, you can invest in any one of the paid versions WPforms as they all contain the complete set of anti-spam tools. The other nice thing is that you really only need to purchase WPforms once as your paid version continues to work indefinitely even if you choose not to renew. They also have a money back guarantee in case you are not satisfied so you are at no risk of wasting your money. Shown here are the settings I use within WPforms to activate all the anti-spam features.

Anti-Spam Getting Started
The easiest way to proceed is to purchase any version of WPforms, then install and activate it like you would any other wordpress plugin. Be sure to save a copy of your WPforms plug-in locally as well for safe keeping in case you need to reinstall it later. Once you have WPforms installed, then follow the simple instructions they provide for activating all of the anti-spam options.
